Arbitration in Uganda
Arbitration is a widely used form of alternative dispute resolution in Uganda, with a well-developed legal framework for arbitration, including the Arbitration and Conciliation Act Cap.4, which was enacted in 1996 and is based on the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration. The Act provides for the resolution of domestic and international disputes through arbitration and sets out the rules and procedures for conducting arbitration proceedings in Uganda. The Act also provides for the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards in Uganda, subject to certain conditions. Additionally, Uganda is a signatory to the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, which provides a framework for the recognition and enforcement of arbitration awards in participating jurisdictions.
